Scotland – Day 9 (Inverness)

Scotland – Day 9 (Inverness)

Day 9 – Monday, September 25, 2017

Nice, Long nights sleep and we are ready to head out for our next stop which is Inverness.  1st we have a wonderful breakfast at the Aurora B&B.  It’s about a 100 mile trip and it starts out cool and rainy. It’s beautiful drive full of farms with Sheep everywhere and Turbine windmills all along the hillsides.  The drive is broken up every few miles with small towns and roundabouts.  I have seen a few roundabouts at home but nothing like they have here and I must say – I like them.

I have been accused (probably rightly so)  by a few of my passengers of driving too fast and not allowing for the taking of pictures and seeing some of the sights.  I vow to strive to do better.  One of those efforts results in mine & Jerry’s 1st trip to a castle (Brodies Castle).

We arrived at our new B&B (Lynver Guest House) for the next. few days shortly after 1PM.  Check in isn’t until 3 but the owners are there and graciously allow us to put our bags in our room and off we go to explore Inverness.  Really like this place – Lots of nooks and crannies and the gardens are impeccably kept for the most part.  Sharon and I strike up a conversation with a gentleman trimming his shrubs and 20 minutes later we are still chatting about Plants, Scotland, and places to see.  The sun has come out and the temperature is very pleasant in the low 60’s.

We then hook up with Kat & Jerry who had taken off in their own direction earlier and head towards Inverness Castle and into a nice pub (Castle Tavern) directly across the street.  Fish & Chips, Veggie Burger, Steak & Ale Pie,  A pint of Ale for me and IRN BRU for Jerry.  Ahhh – I do like the Pubs :).

We then walk up to Inverness Castle and thru the Town Center on our way back to the room.  Beautiful City – Beautiful Weather – It was A Very Good Day 🙂

Scotland – Day 8 (Aberdeen)

Scotland – Day 8 (Aberdeen)

Day 8 – Sunday September 24, 2017

On this morning us guys arrive early in the morning and the gals meet us at the airport rental site.   The rental clerk as they most often do tries to sell me on upgrades, insurance, etc. etc..  The one curious thing he tries to sell me is an upgrade for a smaller car.  Why would i pay more for a smaller car when I specifically had asked for a mini van.  I of course say no to all of these and off we go in or black Alahambra SUV mini van. Did I mention none of us had ever driven in a vehicle in another country, much less one that you drive on the left side of the road.  And did i also mention I said no to all of the extras – including adding on another driver?   So I was THE designated Driver.  Did I also mention I quickly figured out why he tried to talk me into a smaller vehicle and why it cost more.  The fricken roads are as narrow as shit and SUV’s and mini vans don’t quite fit into their lanes.  🙁

So after a long nights flight and a bit of a pain in my lower back we started on our 150 mile journey to Aberdeen for a one night stay in a B&B (Aurora Guest House).  I must say after a few minutes of fear and anxiety that driving on the left side isn’t so tough.  My problem was that the steering wheel is on the right side of the vehicle and I find myself shying away from the center line and I bumped the curb more than once and had Jerry flinching several times on our trip.

We arrive at the B&B in one piece about 1PM and although a bit early we try to check in early.  Hmmm, guess we forgot to read the fine print.  It’s Sunday and check in on Sunday’s is 6PM and no one is at home.  So off we go to see some sights for a few hours before check in.  We 1st head to the Beach which is quite crowded despite overcast, rainy, breezy, and about 50 degrees.  I say crowded we only saw one idiot (surfer) actually in the water but appears this is the place to go to hang. We still have a few hours to kill so we head off for the Craigmyle house (For Allen).  on our way back from Craigmyle house we stop at a nice restaurant for sandwiches and coffee.  About 6 PM we finally check in and Jerry and I are pretty much toast and retire for the evening.

Scotland – Day 7 (Edinburgh)

Day 7 – Saturday September 23, 2017

I guess this is the day we begin our goodbye to Edinburgh. It has been an incredible experience. The Scots are friendly kind and patient to those of us that ask the same questions over and over. The tourists, not so much. This is an ancient city that the Scots are trying very hard to preserve with little money  . Signs of restoration are found everywhere. They appreciate the country and their past. And are a loyal lot. When you are being waited on by a cutie in a kilt with that accent, it’s not to buy the store. I will miss Edinburgh but am looking forward to meeting up with the husbands and showing them this beautiful country.

Day 6 – Friday September 22, 2017

Went to see the Real Mary Kings Close today.  Interesting tour.  The close itself is 3 stories underground.  People with the plague were quarantined there. The tour guide asked us not to touch the walls.  He said it wasn’t a matter of what we left behind but who we took with us when we left.  Made our way back to the hotel…again 2 miles uphill and they had the red carpet rolled out.  I don’t think it was for us!
