Summer outings with Grandkids

Summer outings with Grandkids

Over the last couple of weeks I have been extremely fortunate to spend some time with my grandkids (Hugh, Beck, Lila, & Celia) outside enjoying some of the natural beauties in the Kentucky outdoors.

First up was a kayaking trip on Floyd’s Fork in the Parklands with Hugh, Celia, and Casey. We got a fairly early start around 8:30 or 9 in the morning. They live really close to Floyd’s fork at Shelbyville road and we have constructed (some on other people’s property) a route that we can drag the Kayaks a couple hundred yards to a launching point on the fork. Casey had earlier met me and left his truck a a takeout point past Fisherville about 7 miles downstream.

The turtles were out in force and Hugh was on the hunt from the get go, eventually catching a baby turtle. He admired his catch a bit and then released it back to its home. Celia and I played bumper kayaks and had a few races. Casey didn’t lose his cell phone so his trip was also a success.

I honestly can’t think of a better way to spend the day than with LOVED ones strolling down a beautiful stream on a gorgeous day enjoying the beauties of nature in the company of such wonderful people. ❤️

Next up was a somewhat unplanned hike in Jefferson Memorial forest with Beck, Lila, & Steve. I was originally supposed to be hiking and camping at Red River Gorge with my hiking buddy(Jim Bobbit AKA Trailblazer Jim). Unfortunately, my back has been giving me hell the last month or so and had really been acting up 5e last few days so I reluctantly had to cancel that trip ?. I was pretty bummed and had resigned myself to R & R to see if that helped my back. Like most back issues it really hurts the most when not moving or sitting. I wasn’t worried about the hiking so much as the camping part and I really didn’t want to get into the woods and have a flare up.

Anyways, Steve called me and said he was taking the kids to Jefferson Memorial forest on Saturday for a hike and asked me to join. I figured this was a great way to test my “theory” about the hiking vs camping.

We (Beck, Lila, Steve, & Rasta) were on the trail about 9:30 AM. Another gorgeous day with low humidity made it a perfect day to get out hiking. The 1st mile or so were pretty much uphill and under the Zipline kingdom course that looks like something we might want to do on another day. We saw several deer and a few toads along the way and We identified as many different kinds of trees as we know.

Our hike was to do the Mitchell hill lake loop of about 3 1/2 miles round trip. The lake was deserted except for us and we sat around a picnic table and had our snacks. Lila headed to the lake to investigate the fish and was wishing she had a fishing pole.

Once we got back to the welcome center we took a vote on doing another short hike. Steve & Lila voted yes while Beck & Rasta voted no, so it came down to me and I voted yes and suggested we go on the silstone for a mile or so and come back by Tom Wallace lake. That proved to be just about right for a little over 5 miles in total. We stopped at the DQ in Fairdale and everyone got an ice cream including a pup cup for Rasta.

I honestly can’t think of a better way to spend the day than with LOVED ones then going on a hike in the woods on a gorgeous day enjoying the beauty of nature in the company of such wonderful people. ❤️
