2018 Smoky Mountains Hiking Trip – Post Thoughts

Whew!

3 days and 30+ miles on the trail was a bit rougher than I expected. The 1st day was a shorter mileage day and was a great way to start my hike. Since the trip was “abbreviated” we had to do more miles than we should on day 2 and 3 in order to get to Newfound Gap by Saturday evening. The ice on the trail was at times difficult to traverse. I fell 3 or 4 times and almost broke one of my trekking poles on one of my falls.

I thoroughly enjoyed the hiking part of the trip (minus the ice) and the views at times were spectacular. I was kinda dreading staying in the shelters but all in all they weren’t that bad. The ones I stayed in weren’t overcrowded and it was nice to be protected from the elements. Even with all that I did not sleep very well and the camping part was not my favorite part.
